Fatigue and the S-N Curve

Fatigue performance refers to a building structure’s ability to withstand failure under repeated or cyclic loading. This is assessed through fatigue tests, where a controlled stress cycle is applied until the component fails. The results are displayed on an S-N Curve, which plots the stress amplitude against the number of cycles to failure. The S-N Curve reveals the fatigue limit—the maximum stress level a structure component can endure without failure. A higher S-N Curve signifies better fatigue performance, leading to greater longevity and safety of the structure.

nVent LENTON Ultimate Performance

It is crucial for structures exposed to dynamic forces—such as bridges, railways, wind turbines and offshore platforms—to be built using components that can guarantee the highest fatigue performance for the most number of years possible, even under demanding conditions. As a world leader in advanced mechanical rebar splicing systems, nVent LENTON solutions are designed to meet and exceed the standards for rebar couplers by ensuring a higher fatigue performance than local and international specifications.

nVent LENTON Ultimate, our patented taper-threaded coupler system, offers superior fatigue results over similar solutions and above the European standard (Eurocode 2). The graph below shows the difference between the S-N Curves of nVent LENTON Ultimate, a swaged type coupler system, and the Eurocode 2 minimum requirement.

Structural integrity, Safety and Efficiency with nVent LENTON Ultimate

Due to the characteristics mentioned above, and the superior performance and assistance of our solutions and teams, nVent LENTON Ultimate plays a crucial role in the construction of numerous infrastructure projects across the globe.

Contractors choose nVent LENTON Ultimate all around the world because it ensures structural integrity, safety and efficiency on the job site allowing builders to experience:

  • Time savings—rebar cages can be detailed, inspected, manufactured, delivered and fixed into place for a fraction of the time due to the quick self-aligning rebar connections.
  • Cost efficiency and improved safety—increased productivity and reduced labor at elevated heights.
  • Reduced on-site storage—prefabricated reinforcement cages can be fixed into place upon arrival.
